However, she soon becomes entangled in the ghostly secrets surrounding her family and finds out that circumstances are not quite what they seem. Having lost four sisters already, with the help of her childhood friend, her remaining sisters, and the captivating son of a seafaring captain, Annaleigh embarks on a mission to solve the suspicious death of her most recent sister. As the second-born daughter of a duke of her people, The People of The Salt, she is tasked with many duties, including helping her new stepmother grow accustomed to the strange mourning customs of the province and her Highmoor household. House of Salt and Sorrows follows 18-year-old Annaleigh and the mystery of the death that constantly surrounds her. While there are many elements of the gothic genre in this novel, there is also fantasy and mythology, so I guess this book would fall in the young adult fantasy/horror/gothic/romance/fairytale-spinoff genre? I had never read the original tale of “The Twelve Dancing Princesses”, but I think this was a very captivating read with many twists and turns that is bound to keep the reader on edge. For one, I didn’t even catch that it was supposed to be a fairytale spinoff until I read the back flap while I was half-way through the story. This book was definitely different from what I thought it’d be.

While I did actually enjoy The Nursery, it’s a very intense novel, and reading it was a hectic experience. After finishing that book, I had a hard time picking up another novel by Johnstone. I wrote the above paragraphs about The Nursery roughly a year ago. There’s another, more thorough, review of this book on Glorious Trash if you want more details before reading it If you wanna trade me something good, message me.) This shit is truly mental, but it’s damn entertaining. Johnstone’s horror novels have been released as e-books, but The Nursery has not yet been given this treatment. The Nursery is a tricky one to find though. This book is more about violence, sex and Satanism… oh and vampires. There is a nursery in the story, but it’s not super important to the plot. The cover and title are fairly misleading. This is perhaps the most insane horror novel I’ve ever read. Fortunately, it completely lived up to the hype. Well, after reading that, there was no way in Hell that I wasn’t going to track down this book. “a Satan who is obsessed by anal sex” – this is part of the description of The Nursery given in Paperbacks from Hell. In fact, this book inspired me to create the emotional flashback cards you can now download for free here. The Americanism and sometimes under-par formatting lets it down a little, it’s no literary masterpiece and ‘which trauma type are you?’ style quiz can take the tone down a little, but the accessible context and delivery is life-changing. Walker, also with lived-experience of CPTSD, has presented and explained everything in a way which will finally give you some answers after a lifetime of searching. There is a lot of scientifically validated information and research here. And if you can only read one book to start with, this is also a good one to go for. Everyone who has any interest or relationship with complex trauma should read this book. This was the first book I ever read which talked about complex PTSD and emotional flashbacks in such accessible and easy-to-understand terms. A must-read book about Complex PTSD, very accessible, and with practical advice. She refuses to go along with the kidnapper's demand and won't even tell the police the girl is missing. "In the Presence of the Enemy" takes a terrific set-up and builds on it with integrity. George isn't merely pulling off a parlour trick for Anglophiles. It’s still affecting, however: Music’s most famous working Parisians, the improbable superstars who went from rave kids to dance heroes to standing next to Beyoncé at the TIDAL launch event, are apparently calling it quits after a long and fruitful career. (They offered no reason for the split.) It’s a somewhat silly way to end one of the most successful musical pairings of the 21st century-the moment of self-destruction is primed to be GIF’d into oblivion itself-and it’s difficult to take two guys who never publicly took their helmets off at face value.
